Conservatives celebrate 10 years in charge of Fareham Borough Council

It is exactly 10 years since the Conservative Party won control of Fareham Borough Council.  On that day in 1999 Councillor Seán Woodward took up the reins of power and brought Conservative policies of good housekeeping and small government to bear at a local level.  During the last 10 years Fareham Borough Council has enjoyed many significant achievements:

  • Delivered on the Conservative pledges of a new shopping centre and multiplex cinema
  • Kept Council Tax increases and the sum of Council Tax payable by each household for Fareham Borough Council's services at almost the lowest level in the country
  • Introduced a free green waste collection service
  • Achieved one of the highest recycling rates in the country
  • Received one of the best Audit Commission performance scores in the country when the auditors said:

    • Fareham is a good Council and is improving and is working to make the area a more prosperous, safe and attractive place to live
    • There is a determination to succeed demonstrated by a track record of sustained focus on issues that matter
    • Strong leadership, together with effective, committed and focused councillors, managers and operational staff are helping to deliver its ambitions and priorities
    • The Council is providing good services to local people, particularly environmental and planning services
    • The Council is self-aware and is putting in place the building blocks to improve services in the future, particularly by developing information technology to become more responsive and customer focused
    • The Council actively consults with local people to help shape priorities, plans and service delivery
    • The Council manages its finances well
  • Fareham has been a multiple award winner in the South and South–East element of Britain in Bloom and received the “Champion of Champions” award
  • Ferneham Hall has been recognised as one of the top 5 entertainment venues in the country
  • Fareham Leisure Centre has been completely refurbished
  • The Western end of West Street in Fareham Town Centre has been refurbished and won the Fareham Society's best new landscape award
  • A number of new community centres and sports pavilions have been opened across the Borough including buildings in Whiteley, Hill Head, Portchester and Burridge
  • A Borough-wide control on drinking in public places was implemented
  • Survey after survey places Fareham as one of the best places to live in Britain with very high levels of resident and visitor satisfaction
  • A new CommunityHospital is under construction at Coldeast in Sarisbury
  • Community Action Teams were introduced across the Borough giving residents far more say in the Council's priorities in their neighbourhoods
  • Fareham Borough Council's staff have the lowest sickness absence in the county
  • The Conservative vote at the last Borough election in 2008 rose to 61% of the total vote

The Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Conservative Councillor Seán Woodward said:  "I have been privileged to be able to lead the Council into the new millennium and guide it towards so many successes.  These successes have been in no small measure down to the officers of the Council and my fellow Councillors of all parties buying in to and helping deliver the Conservative vision for the Borough and sharing the enthusiasm of the Conservative Councillors to make Fareham into recognisably one of the best places to live, work and bring up a family

"While we have achieved much there is plenty still to do and many new challenges to face.  We are grateful for the trust that the people of Fareham have placed in us and we will continue to do our best for them."

Fareham's Member of Parliament, Mark Hoban, added:  "I am very proud of my colleagues on Fareham Borough Council.  In a decade of Conservative control Fareham Borough Council has done an excellent job for local people.  Conservative Councillors have done the double: one of the lowest levels of Council Tax in the country and better services for the local community.  It is a fine example of what Conservatives can do in power and is a reminder with European and County Council elections next month and a General Election next year why people should vote Conservative.''
