Councillor Seán Woodward

Borough Councillor for Sarisbury, Leader of Fareham Borough Council

County Councillor for Fareham Sarisbury, Executive Member for Recreation & Heritage

Director, Solent Local Enterprise Partnership

I am married to Rosemary and we have a 19-year old son, James. We live in the Sarisbury Ward, having lived in the Western Wards of Fareham for 48 years. I have an Honours Degree in Biology and work in the field of healthcare where I am the Managing Director of LBhealthcare, a Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation company in Whiteley.

I am Past President of the Rotary Club of Fareham, a founder member of the Rotary Club of Whiteley and a member of the National Trust. I am also the President of the Fareham and District Branch of the Parkinson's Disease Society.

I have always attempted to keep as tight a reign as possible on extra housebuilding in the Sarisbury/Swanwick/Burridge/Whiteley area while working within the confines of laid-down planning policies. A top priority had been to keep major housebuilding off the Coldeast Hospital site and during my first 23 years as Sarisbury's Councillor not one house had been completed on the land although following a planning permission granted on appeal that changed. It is now providing a home to many people along with many much-needed community facilities including the fantastic Holly Hill Leisure Centre.

I feel that it is important within major development areas that suitable community facilities are provided. I have been instrumental in negotiating for and/or identifying sites for such facilities in Whiteley as a Community Centre, Doctors' Surgery, Playgrounds, Skatepark, Schools and Shops. I am also continually fighting for the completion of Whiteley Way, which will help Whiteley, as well as relieving traffic congestion in Burridge and Swanwick. We need community facilities in this area, not many more houses.

I have been instrumental in proposing and achieving funding for environmental improvements in the area including the facelift for Park Gate shopping area and improvements to Sarisbury Green and Swanwick Shore, including bringing about their designation as Conservation Areas.

I have been Leader of Fareham Borough Council for the last 19 years as well as having been the Hampshire County Council Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment since 2013 and following that the Executive Member for Recreation & Heritage.  I have worked to bring forward many improvements in Fareham and Hampshire including improved infrastructure, investments, shopping centres and schools.  There is however much still to do to improve the area that we all share.

When I am not engaged in work I like to go horse-riding with my son and enjoy our beautiful countryside.  I am a member of the National Trust, the Friends of Bursledon Brickworks and of the Royal Society of Biology.
